where i’m from
music and memories
of mexico city
I was born in Mexico City in 1971, during a time of economic chaos and social unrest. For the average Mexican, life was tough and most people struggled just to make ends meet. My family were luckier than most, we lived in a big, old colonial-style house in Lomas de Chapultepec, which was a very posh neighborhood. My mother was a teacher and my father was a musician, and, while you could say we were middle class, we certainly weren’t in the US sense of the term. We may have had many of the privileges that I now enjoy living here in the States, but we sure had a lot less money!
Growing up, music played a very important role for my family. My father has dedicated his life to singing traditional Mexican boleros — poetic folk songs about desire, passion, deception, betrayal, death, pain, suffering and joy — songs that speak to common human experiences.
