the healing power of naikan
You argue with your boyfriend over breakfast. You twist your ankle running for the train. By the time you hobble into the office, you’ve missed your 9 o’clock meeting — and you’re ready to go mano a mano with anyone who crosses your path. You might as well give in to the gloom. It’s one of those days, chica, and there’s nothing that will change that.
Or is there?
Naikan, a Japanese form of meditation now gaining popularity in the United States, could be just the remedy for a bad day — or even for a more serious depression. And since women overall, and Latinas in particular, have a high rate of depression, that’s news many of us could use.
Developed by a devout Buddhist in the 1940s, Naikan is a method of self-reflection that teaches you to take an attitude of thankfulness toward the world. You learn to look at what the world has given you instead of focusing on your disappointments. And this simple practice can transform your life.
